Denpasar Audio Guide
Denpasar owes its name to a market —den, north, and pasar, market— and within a few streets of its centre it keeps the end of the kingdom of Badung and the birth of Bali's capital. In Puputan Square, on 20 September 1906, the raja I Gusti Ngurah Made Agung left his palace with his court dressed in white and walked towards the Dutch army; at least a thousand Balinese died. On the square's northwest corner, the four-faced statue of Catur Muka now marks the city's kilometre zero. To the east, the Bali Museum, the oldest on the island, opened in 1932 with walls and courtyards inspired by the palace burned in 1906, and beside it Pura Jagatnatha, consecrated in 1968, raises a white coral padmasana some 15 metres tall dedicated to Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa. Less than a kilometre away, Pasar Badung, rebuilt after the 2016 fire, looks across the Badung river to the Kumbasari art market. In Renon, the Bajra Sandhi Monument, 45 metres tall and shaped like a priest's bell, tells in 33 dioramas the struggle of the Balinese people from prehistory to independence. And in Sanur, the beach where Dutch troops landed in 1906 holds the house-museum of the Belgian painter Le Mayeur and Ni Pollok, while at Blanjong temple the Blanjong pillar of the year 914 still stands: Bali's oldest dated inscription, in two scripts and two languages.

The Denpasar audio guide is available in Spanish and English, with researched, fact-checked narration on the kingdom of Badung, colonial Bali and the struggle for independence.
The audio guide brings together 7 independent routes with about five and a half hours of narration in total, spread over 22 audio stops and from 25 to 75 minutes per route. Puputan Square, the Bali Museum, Pura Jagatnatha and Pasar Badung chain together in the centre; the Bajra Sandhi Monument, Sanur beach and Pura Blanjong require getting around and can be left for another day.
They are different experiences. The EarGuide audio guide lets you explore Denpasar without timetables or groups, pause and resume whenever you like, and replay any explanation as often as you need. It suits independent travellers, families and anyone who prefers to understand the city at their own pace, with no prior knowledge of Bali.
The Denpasar audio guide covers 7 main sites: Puputan Square, the Bali Museum, Pura Jagatnatha, Pasar Badung and the Badung river, the Bajra Sandhi Monument, Sanur beach with the Le Mayeur Museum, and Pura Blanjong with the Blanjong pillar.
Only partly. Puputan Square, the Bali Museum and Pura Jagatnatha stand side by side, less than 200 metres apart in a straight line, and Pasar Badung is less than a kilometre to the west: all four can be walked. The Bajra Sandhi Monument is about 2.5 km southeast of the square, in Renon, and Sanur beach and Pura Blanjong, on the Sanur coast, are between 5.5 and 7 km away, with about 3.5 km between them. For those three, a motorbike, car or taxi is advisable.
Yes. Purchases belong to your EarGuide account, not to one app or one phone. A city unlocked in the EarGuide app is also unlocked in that city's own app, and the other way round, on both iPhone and Android. Just sign in with the same account on the other device. The store's “restore purchases” button only covers the app the purchase was made in, so signing in is what carries it across.
The EarGuide app is free and the Puputan Square route can be heard for free; the other six are unlocked together with a one-time payment. Offline, at your own pace.
