What to see in Seville with the EarGuide audio guide

Seville grew between the Guadalquivir and its Almohad wall, and almost everything the audio guide covers fits into a single walk. In the centre, Seville Cathedral was raised from 1401 over the main mosque, and the mosque is still standing inside it: its minaret of 1184 is the Giralda, its ablutions courtyard is the Patio de los Naranjos, and beneath a dome that collapsed twice stand the largest altarpiece in Christendom and the tomb of Columbus. Wall to wall, the Royal Alcázar began in 913 as the seat of government of Abd al-Rahman III and, after the Mudéjar palace Pedro I built following the earthquake of 1356, remains the oldest royal palace in use in Europe. The Santa Cruz Quarter is the old Jewish quarter, attacked in 1391 and rebuilt between 1912 and 1920 as a maze of squares designed for visitors, with Murillo buried beneath one of them. By the river, the Torre del Oro, twelve-sided and built in 1220-1221, closed the wall on the Guadalquivir side, and its gold was never gold but a coating of lime and straw; a few steps away, the Maestranza Bullring took 120 years to close, from 1761 to 1881, which is why its ring is an oval of 30 uneven sides. To the south, Aníbal González's Plaza de España, a 230-metre semicircle of brick and tile with 48 provincial benches, was the great work of the Ibero-American Exposition of 1929; and to the north, the Metropol Parasol covers Plaza de la Encarnación with six 26-metre timber parasols, above first-century Roman houses and a food market.

How much does the Seville audio guide cost?

The EarGuide app is free. The Seville audio guide includes 7 independent routes with about four hours of narration spread across 7 sites and 36 audio stops, and it is found inside the app itself.

Do I need an internet connection to use the audio guide?

No. EarGuide works entirely offline. Download the routes over WiFi before you set out and you can use the audio guide with no connection and no data use throughout your visit. The map shows your GPS position in real time even without coverage.

What languages is the Seville audio guide available in?

The Seville audio guide is available in Spanish and English, with researched, fact-checked narration on Almohad Seville, the city of the Castilian kings and the Ibero-American Exposition of 1929.

How long does the full tour take?

The audio guide brings together 7 independent routes with about four hours of narration in total, from 25 to 45 minutes per route. They fit into one long day, or can be spread over two: one for the Cathedral and Giralda, the Royal Alcázar and the Santa Cruz Quarter, and another for the Torre del Oro, the Maestranza, Plaza de España and the Metropol Parasol.

Is the audio guide better than a free walking tour or a guided visit?

They are different experiences. The EarGuide audio guide lets you explore Seville without timetables or groups, pause and resume whenever you like, and replay any explanation as often as you need. It suits independent travellers, families and anyone who prefers to understand the city at their own pace, with no prior knowledge of its history.

Which landmarks and points of interest does it include?

The Seville audio guide covers 7 main sites: Seville Cathedral and the Giralda, the Royal Alcázar, Plaza de España, the Torre del Oro, the Santa Cruz Quarter, the Maestranza Bullring and the Metropol Parasol (Setas de Sevilla).

Can I do it all on foot?

Yes. The Cathedral, the Royal Alcázar and the Santa Cruz Quarter are about 300 metres from one another. The Torre del Oro and the Maestranza Bullring stand by the river, about 500 metres west of the Cathedral and about 400 metres from each other. Plaza de España is a little under a kilometre south of the Alcázar, and the Metropol Parasol about 800 metres north of the Cathedral. From end to end, from the Metropol Parasol to Plaza de España, it is about two kilometres, so the whole route can be done on foot.

Can I use a purchase in the other EarGuide apps or on another phone?

Yes. Purchases belong to your EarGuide account, not to one app or one phone. A city unlocked in the EarGuide app is also unlocked in that city's own app, and the other way round, on both iPhone and Android. Just sign in with the same account on the other device. The store's “restore purchases” button only covers the app the purchase was made in, so signing in is what carries it across.
